What will I Learn?
Our aim is to promote a love of language learning and an appreciation of different cultures. All pupils study both French and Spanish during Years 7 and 8. Among Departmental staff are a native Spanish teacher, and a visiting Spanish Assistant who takes small groups for French conversation.
Year 7 & 8
In Years 7 and 8, we follow the new Viva 2 course to prepare pupils for GCSE from the beginning. The four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are developed through a range of activities and resources.
At the end of each year, the Onatti Theatre Company visits us to perform their latest Spanish comedy play.
In Year 9, pupils can choose Spanish as an optional subject. We continue to follow the Viva 3 course to prepare pupils for GCSE. The four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are developed through a range of activities and resources which introduce pupils to the GCSE examination requirements.
At the end of the year, the Onatti Theatre Company again visits us to perform their latest Spanish comedy play.
Pupils will already be familiar with some of the topics covered at GCSE and they will learn to discuss new themes such as Hispanic identity and culture; local, national, international and global areas of interest; current and future study and employment. Having already gained a good understanding of grammar, pupils will learn to communicate effectively and with spontaneity when speaking and writing. For GCSE we follow the AQA specification. There will be examinations for listening, reading, speaking and writing.
The subject is brought to life with a visit to Spain in Year 10 or 11.
A weekly GCSE Spanish Clinic offers support. Year 11 pupils attend the GCSE Spanish Revision Conference to gain advice from AQA examiners.
