  • Superb Under 14 Girls Book Place in National Finals

    Published 22/01/18

The Girls Under 14 Hockey Team hosted Blundells School, from Devon, in a play-off match between the runners up of the North, and The West of England,  to decide which school would play in the National Finals next month.

The girls started brightly, with probing play by Daisy Bennett and Isabel Kell, before a rash stick tackle brought a penalty stroke. Bennett stepped up nervelessly to convert the penalty, scoring in the bottom left hand corner.

Blundells’ strong midfield then began to dominate, and much of the rest of the first half saw Hill House defending resolutely, including superb sweeping by Eve Bishop, who had risen from her sick bed to play, and a number of inspirational saves by Grace Thomas.

The second half followed a similar a pattern, with Emma Tonge, Niamh Doody and Narin Cowell increasingly influential in defensive midfield, until a stunning breakaway run by Bennett was converted ruthlessly by captain Isobel Flanagan, to end the game 2-0.

The girls will now play in the last 8 of the country at the national finals, to be held at the end of February at the Lee Valley Hockey Stadium in London.

Year 9 student, Sam Honeybone has seen his hard work pay off for him after he was recently awarded the Trinity Exhibition Award from Trinity College London.

The award, which has never been won by anyone from Doncaster before, was given to Sam for achieving one of the highest scores across the UK and Ireland in his grade 7 recorder exam.

The award was given at this year’s William Appleby Awards Ceremony where Sam was presented with his certificate and £50 prize money.

Sam, 13, said, “I was really pleased to be given this award. I thought I was just going to be performing at the ceremony, my parents decided to keep the award as a surprise for me on the evening, so it came as a real shock.”

Director of Music, Mr Cadman, said, “It is wonderful to see Sam’s talent recognised in this way. He works extremely hard honing his craft, so it is no surprise to find that he is one of the best in the UK and Ireland. We are very proud of his achievements.”
