Tally Marking

Tally Marking: An effective tool for peer and self assessment

Pupils find this grid a useful tool not only to identify and recognise success criteria for a high quality piece of written work but also to visually identify where they've successfully applied the required skills. This tool is also effective in directing pupils to give feedback specifically linked to the criteria required for success with specific examples to back up their comments. The expectation is that they should have at least 2 ticks in every box.

Differentiation / Extension:

  • The marker can annotate the piece of work to note where a category or success criteria has been recognised.
  • The marker can annotate to indicate where a pupil has missed an opportunity to include one of the categories or success criteria.
  • Encourage pupils to focus on the quality of each category.
