Taboo: Explaining key terms without using the words commonly associated. Fast, competitive retrieval activity. Helps pupils to evidence deeper understanding.

This enjoyable activity stretches pupils in a competitive environment to see how well they understand and recognise key terms. Great as a starter or plenary as a low stakes quiz.

Pupils take it in turns to attempt to prompt their teammates to guess as many keywords/key terms as possible in the allotted time. However, each card also has "taboo" (forbidden) words listed which may not be used. If the pupil is able to get their teammates to guess the key term, they gain that card. After the allocated time, another pupil gains the remaining pack of taboo cards and the process is repeated. The player with the most cards gained at the end wins. This is an excellent way to get stretch students to articulate and explain the key term without using easily associated words.
This can evidence both knowledge and understanding. Pupils enjoy the competitive element and benefit from the retrieval practise.
