What will I Learn?

In addition to pupils taking Games and Physical Education throughout the school, the department also offers GCSE Physical Education to Years 10 and 11, which enables pupils to continue to pursue their sporting endeavours whilst gaining a theoretical insight into performance, the human body and sporting issues.

The pupils follow the AQA GCSE course which is split into 60% practical performance and 40% theory. The practical element comprises four sports and is continually assessed over the two years. The theory element is an hour and a half examination at the end of the course.

The list of practical choices available is exhaustive with pupils able to choose pretty much any sport imaginable in which to be assessed from the traditional rugby, hockey, football and netball to the more unusual skiing and surfing. The theoretical exam has a biological element and also looks at current issues in sport such as the media, sponsorship, drugs in sport, racism in sport, and the Olympic Games.

Complementary trips, to centres such as the EIS in Sheffield and university visits help enhance the pupils understanding and enjoyment of the course.
