What will I Learn?

All pupils study Music in Years 7 and 8, after which it is an optional subject. In addition to academic lessons, all pupils have the opportunity to participate in a huge array of musical experiences, whether by learning an instrument or voice, or playing or singing in one of our many groups and choirs.

Year 7

Pupils study composition skills, music theory and also have practical group lessons.

Year 8

Pupils continue to study composition skills, music theory and also have practical group lessons.

Year 9

Pupils can choose Music as an optional subject, and continue to study composition skills and music theory.

GCSE

Music GCSE is a very stimulating and interesting course that enables students to not only study and analyse set works within musical history but also to compose and perform during the two years of the course.

Those students who are interested in taking music as an option need to:

  • Be having weekly instrumental lessons on an orchestral instrument, piano or voice and to be approximately Grade 4+ standard
  • Be able to read music proficiently
  • Be at least Grade 3 standard in theory
  • Be an active and committed member of the schoolmusic ensembles/choirs
  • Have a wide range of listening interests including all classical music genres

Unit 1: Performing Music (internally assessed)

  • One solo performance
  • One ensemble performance

30% of the total marks. (15% each)

Unit 2: Composing Music (internally assessed)

  • Two compositions – 1 set to a brief and 1 free composition

30% of the total marks (15% each)

Unit 3: Listening and Appraising

  • A 1-hour and 45 minute written paper
  • All questions relate to 8 set works

40% of the total marks
