Greta and Josh stride ahead

Despite only being a few weeks into the new school year, two athletes at opposite ends of the school are celebrating outstanding achievements in their respective events.

Joshua Dickinson in Year 11, winner of this year’s London Mini Marathon, came 1st in the English Schools Fell Running Championships which were held at Giggleswick School in Settle. Fell running is a much harder discipline than cross country as runners have to navigate themselves between check points.

Greta Highfield in Year 5 has just returned from representing the Great Britain team at the 2017 UIPM Biathle World Championships in Viveiro, Spain. Biathle is a continuous run-swim-run race which enables Greta to combine her two passions of swimming and running. At the World Championships Greta finished in a very respectable 9th place out of nearly 30 athletes. As each age group covers two school years, Greta was actually one of the youngest in the race. She has already started to make preparations to return to next years championships and earn a medal.

“Both pupils are an inspiration to their peers. Joshua continues to go from strength to strength, balancing his studies with new challenges such as fell running. Greta’s achievements have caused a massive buzz around the junior swim squad as everyone wants to emulate her!” said Mr Lawrie, who runs the school swimming squad.
